Dgital Identity unConference Europe was inspired by the Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) that has been held twice a year, since 2005 in California for the global community working on Internet Identity. 

In late 2022 IIW Co-founder Kaliya Young and longtime IIW Producer and Open Space Facilitator Heidi N Saul met with the co-founder of Trust Square who agreed to support bringing an IIW Inspired™ event to Europe. In an initial meeting in Nov. 2022, attended by Daniel Gasteiger and Marc Degen of Trust Square, Andreas Freitag of Procivis, and Kaliya Young and Heidi N Saul from IIW, the name Digital Identity unConference Europe | dice  was decided on. We all liked the catchy acronym!    

The first event took place at Trust Square Zurich in June of 2023 followed by two more in 2024 and 2025. All of these events took place with Co-hosts Trust Square and IIW along with consistent planning support from In-Kind Collaborators DIDAS, Procivis and HSLU Hochschule Lucerne, via staff members participating in planning meetings, promoting the event, reaching out to potential sponsors, inviting key attendees and contributing to the curation of the Day 1 Program.
